Ruminations on the Digital Realm

Journalist, columnist or activist?

⊆ February 29th, 2008 by janstedehouder | ˜ No Comments »

Apparently it isn’t always that easy to tell the difference between a journalist, a columnist or an activist. At least, it is the conclusion I need to draw after receiving an email from a city alderman (Dutch: wethouder) from a midsize town in the Netherland. He refuses to answer questions about some IT-decisions. He considers my requests for clarification as being part of an activist strategy and not as simple straightforward journalistic practice. To quote him: “I do not appreciate this and therefore I will no longer answer any of your e-mails”. Hmmm… This situation gives rise to some questions. When does critical journalism become activism? Can you see a sharp distinction between the roles of journalist, columnist and activist when it comes to open source and open standards? Read more…

Website update

⊆ January 12th, 2008 by janstedehouder | ˜ No Comments »

This weblog will be archived as of January 12th 2008. The complete site has been transferred to a new location: http://www.ruminationsonthedigitalrealm.org. New articles will only appear on the new URL. I will add references to articles on the new website for some time to come, simply because there are quite a few visitors that still land on this page. As of today no new comments can be posted on this location, but only on articles at the new location.

PCLinuxOS Day 3 - Exploring the desktop

⊆ January 4th, 2008 by janstedehouder | ˜ 3 Comments »

I have used the GNOME desktop for most of the time in the last year and a half, but the series about PC-BSD and DesktopBSD did a lot to build up appreciation for the KDE desktop. PCLinuxOS is running the KDE 3.5.8 desktop (after updates) and let’s see how it is organized and what applications are delivered by default.

“Ruminations” moving to it’s own domain

⊆ January 3rd, 2008 by janstedehouder | ˜ 5 Comments »

I have been writing online articles for almost a year and a half now and there is no end in sight, fortunately. In order to improve the visibility of this weblog on the world wide web I deemed it wise to transfer the whole website to a new location. The new URL is http://www.ruminationsonthedigitalrealm.org.

The new website also contains all articles, though there are still a few issues with images that went with those articles. I will keep this website online as well, if only to preserve the score of links that point back to them. Please update your bookmarks to keep on reading Ruminations on the Digital Realm.

Kindest regards,

Jan Stedehouder
